The Golaib kangri (5900m) a part of Zanskar mountains lies to the south of Leh, located in the village of Stok. you can start this trekking expedition either from Stok or from Spituk village. It needs four/five days to complete this expedition. The peak is famous among the tourists both (foreigner and domestic) for its easy accessible, beauty of its own attract everyone to achieive its height and enjoy the view of the Indus and the Karakorum ranges from the top. There are two different way to climb this peak. But mostly tourists prefer to climb it from easy one. If you want to make it more adventurous then choose the other, but it is quite difficult and one should be physically sound and being trained in the field of mountaineering and rock climbing. This peak is just opposite to Stok Kangri. You can see the view of these peaks from Leh town. Best period for doing this trekking expedition between April to ending November depend on snow fall. If the quantity of snow fall is less during winter then you can do this expedition even in winter also but little challenging in the temperature -35 to 40.
01 Leh to Stok bu taxi and trek to Changma
Starting point of trek to this expedition lies at an altitude of (11983ft). Early morning drive is recommended to get to Changma(13270ft) on time. The starting point of trek is around 15kms away from Leh town, takes around 40 to 50 Minutes to reach there by vehicle. Start walking from trekking point through the valley from left bank of the stream. It is an easy walking but long walk through the valley. Takes 2 to 3 hours to get to the camp, the camping site is a junction to go for expedition of this peak and trekking of Marka valley. Possible to trek upto Mankarmo on the same day but to get proper acclimatise, it is recommended to choose this camp for the first day.
Changma to Mankarmo (14376ft)
Start walking from Changma through the valley from right bank of the stream for about 10 minutes. After walking for 10 minutes you reach at the point from where trails lead to vertical ascend. It takes around 20 minutes to get on the top of small la. Walk decent for 10 minutes and keep walking for another 1 hour. This spot is again a junction to go to Matho village from the left and stok kangri from right. In the past this site used to graze animals during summer season by villager of Stok. The camping site is open and amazing to enjoy the view of Golaip kangri from the spot.
Mankarmo to Base camp(16300ft)
Start walking from Mankarmo at around 10.00 AM move by the right side of stream for around 15 minutes, reach at junction and have to walk from left side. Need to follow the stream running from upward glacier. The trails is bit ascend. Takes around two hours from Mankarmo camp. The camp is bounded by mountain from all side.
Base camp to summit to base camp
After having light breakfast need to move for summit at around 1.00 am. it is good to be on the top before 8 o’clock to enjoy the sun rise view on the valley from the top. Generally takes around 6 to 7 hours to get on the top of the peak. take lesser time if you are good walker. After spending some time there on the top, have to start walking back to base camp takes around 3 to 4 hours.
Base camp to trekking point to Leh by vehicle
Recommended for early started as the distance you are covering today is quite far and heat of the sun will make you more tired. It takes around 4 h to 5 hours to get to the pickup point and drive to Leh 40 to 50 minutes.
