June to OctoberChoose distination in Ladakh to feel the joy of gaining height.
The stok kangri (6135m) a part of Zanskar mountain one of the highest among other known and some unnamed peak located in Great Himalayan range, located in Hemis national park to the south of Leh town, head quarter of Leh district. We can start trek to the base camp of this peak either from stok or from Spituk village. It takes four to five days to complete this expedition. This peak is most famous among the tourists both (foreigner and domestic) for its easy accessible and scenic view of the Indus valley, the Karakorum ranges and other from the top of this peak. There are four different way to climb this peak. We can make it more adventurous by choosing the route to summit as per our capability and determination. One should be quite trained in rock climbing and mountaineering if want to do this from other way. Golaip kangri (5900m) is just adjacent to it and also famous among the tourists. Besides these many unnamed peaks and mountains are there also. Best period for doing this expedition, between April to ending October. Technical person can do this in winter when snow fall in good quantity and temperature become low.
Leh to Stok to Changma Starting Point of Trek
Starting point of trek to this expedition lies at an altitude of (11983ft). Early morning drive is recommended to get to Changma (13270ft) so that we can start trekking early to avoid heat of day’s sun and to reach camping site without being tired. The starting point of trek is around 15km away from Leh Head quarter Leh district, takes around 40 to 50 Minutes by vehicle to get there. Start walking from trekking point through the valley from left bank of the stream. It is an easy walking but long walk through the valley. Takes 2 to 3 hours to get to the camp, it is a junction of expedition to this peak and trekking to Marka valley. It is possible to trek up to Mankarmo same day, It is recommended to choose this camp for the first day to get acclimatize properly.
Changma to Mankarmo (14376ft)
Start walking from Changma through the valley from right bank of the stream for about 10 minutes, we reach to the point from where trails lead to vertical ascend. It takes around 20 minutes to get on the top of the la. Walk decent for 10 minutes and keep walking for another 1 hour, time taking depend on walking speed of trekker. It is again a junction to go to Matho village from the left and stok kangri from right. In the past the site was used to graze animals during summer season by villagers of Stok. The camp site is open and the view we can see the view of Golaip kangri from here. After having lunch make your body relax for some time and in the evening recommend to walk around camping site for sometime as you are going on more height.
Mankarmo to Base camp(16300ft)
Start walking from Mankarmo at around 10.00am move by the right side of stream for around 15 minutes, reach at junction and go through the left one. And again there is a stream and we have to follow that to get there. But upcoming route is ascending in nature, takes around two hours from Mankarmo camp. The camp is bounded by mountain from all side.
Base camp to summit to base camp
After having light breakfast at camp, we have to move for summit at around 1.00 am. It is good to get on the top before 8 o’clock to enjoy sunrise view and to take photograph of the scene looks from there. it takes around 7 to 8 hours to reach on the top. It is again depend on capability of walker. It may take more than the time given. After spending some time on the top, we have to start walking downward for base camp takes at least 3 to 4 hours.
Base camp to trekking point to Leh by vehicle
Recommended for early start as the route we cover today is quite far and to avoid heat of the day. It takes around 4 h to 5 hours to get to the pickup point and drive to Leh takes around one hour easy drive.
